Happy Labor Day (for all you workers) from Acadia National Park

Back on Thursday we sailed to the tiny village of Somesville. It was actually the first village here on Mt. Desert Island. The Somes Sound, the only fjord in the eastern US, reaches far up into the island and finally ends here in this lovely spot. We are anchored with many other power and sailboats (N44 21.683 W68 19.658); but thankfully, no lobstermen find this cove suitable for their needs, so we’ve had a few quiet mornings.

We were exploring the harbor by dinghy and decided to try to cross a bar which is exposed at low tide to go and see a HUGE yacht, Floridian, which is anchored in the next cove over, along with a HUGE sailing yacht. Well, the rocky bar is not really crossable at high tide either and we broke the shear pin on the dinghy motor. It took Reinhart a long frustrating time to replace the pin after the years of rust which had formed. But he got it done and we have a fine motor again. When we rode our bikes down to Northeast Harbor the next day we found a reading room at the town docks, and we were surprised to find the Floridian on the cover of one of the magazines as the 47th largest yacht in the world (228 feet), owned by the owner of the Miami Dolphins. Someone arrived to the yacht by helicopter on Thursday and Friday and there has been a lot of activity aboard, so we assume they are on the yacht. Oh, and I thought I saw Madeline Albright on a private 90’ sailing yacht down in Southwest Harbor; but that’s another story.

I was surprised to find that not only are we once again without a wireless signal for the computer in this anchorage, but it is also a bad spot for the cell phone, and we don’t have a digital signal on the boat. If you call, please leave a message and we’ll get back to you during the day when we are on land. We’ve been using our bikes and the free island explorer buses to get around on the island, so we come in contact enough with wireless signals to keep in contact. Please keep the e-mails and comments coming…it’s a real treat for us to keep in contact with folks. It’s been inconvenient for Reinhart and I not to be able to check our e-mails, news, and weather since Thursday morning; you can imagine how rough it will get for us once we leave the US next year!

We’ve decided to stay up here on Mt. Desert Island through the second weekend in September and then make our way down to Annapolis over the following 2 weeks. Unfortunately Mom and Dad aren’t going to be able to make it up here in the next couple of weeks while we are in Maine, and Andreas’ schedule has him booked through late September at the earliest. So if anyone is thinking they need a getaway…we are here and ready for guests, just give us a call! We have lots of folks planning on visiting while we are in Annapolis though, so we are happy knowing we’ll be seeing friends in the next month or so.
