On Tuesday night we went up to Sebastian to have dinner under the stars at Captain Hiram’s and catch the live show. The weather was starting to turn “cold” and we were bundled up in our sweatshirts and jackets for dinner. We said our goodbyes that night, and Lori and Chuck headed off to explore warm and sunny Florida (ha ha) a little further. Wednesday ended up being a very cloudy and cool day. We walked to the Vero Beach waterfront and later took a walk to the art museum, always keeping an eye on that dark sky, but it never rained in Vero despite the forecast for rain all day. The rain did come before sunrise on Thursday, and Thursday ended up being the wash-out they forecasted. A wash-out until 4pm that is, when blue skies tore through the thick clouds and it ended up being a beautiful afternoon…still cool though. A friend and former colleague of mine, Barbara North, came by and we dinghied her over to check out Maia. Then we headed over to the Ocean Grill and met up with my former boss, Roger Edwards, for dinner. It was great to catch up with them again, since we didn’t have that much time together when I was at work in December.
On Friday we decided to take advantage of the beautiful day and the light northerly winds and head a few miles south to Ft. Pierce. The conditions were perfect for practicing with the new spinnaker and Reinhart raised it and doused several times as we made our way south. It is definitely a welcome member of our sail inventory, as it had us sailing at 5-6 knots in winds which we couldn’t usually sail with. The gusts picked up a little more in the afternoon and we could tell that anything over 20 knots were a bit much for it. We came into quiet Faber Cove in Fort Pierce Friday afternoon (N27 27.903 W80 17.744). I was very suspicious that we were the only boat anchored here, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem. I’m writing this on Saturday afternoon in bright sunshine and temps in the high 70s...definite “sick-day” weather! Another boat has joined us and we are currently waiting for good winds to take us from the Ft. Pierce inlet down to Miami…it looks like Monday will be the day for the 24 hour trip. We spoke with a friend from the boat show on Friday night who is anchored in Miami, and we’d like to get down there and join him. We’ll probably arrive Tuesday morning and he’s trying to leave for the Bahamas on Wednesday…at least a week ahead of us. I think we are both getting eager to get on to the Bahamas; so we’ll be taking care of our last US business in Miami quickly, so we can get underway in the next couple of weeks.
