Leverick Bay Resort on the Gorda Sound was as sweet as it could be. We could see Nicol’s vacation home from a few years ago, Double Sunrise, on the top of the hill. We were anchored there to do laundry and get some excellent wireless, but a lot of great amenites came with the moorings, and we could have enjoyed a few days floating in the pool and lounging in their perfectly landscaped tropical paradise. We were running out of days though, and a trip to Gorda Sound would be incomplete without a visit to Bitter End Yacht Club, so at 4pm on Thursday we motored across the Sound and dropped an anchor near Prickly Pear Island at N18 30.175 W64 21.885. The anchored and moored boats stretched all the way from Prickly Pear in front of Saba Rock and Bitter End to Brias Creek. Maltese Falcon found a spot in though, so once again we were in the presence of this masterpiece, the largest sailboat in the world. We dinghied into Bitter End and had sundowners in the refined beach bar…refined, as this was the first beach bar which served drinks in glasses as opposed to plastic cups. It was a perfect sunset in a sublime setting.Diesel in the BVIs and all over the eastern Caribbean is just over $4 a gallon; diesel in St. Croix, 35 miles to the south of the BVIs is $2.70. We decided to save $200 and sail to St. Croix to fill up our tanks before heading to St. Martin. We sailed down to Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda on Friday to check out of the BVIs and spent our last lovely BVI evening back at that perfect beach where we spent 4 days last week (N18 26.320 W64 26.660). We completed our sail to St. Croix on Saturday (N17 45.080 W64 41.860). I was happy to be back in St. Croix, if only to visit that dreamy hardware store once again and pick up everything I had regretted not buying the last time we were here.
The weather is looking good for a Sunday night sail to St. Martin, so in a couple of hours we’ll be weighing anchor, tanking up, and making the 100 mile crossing to arrive in Simpson Bay on the west side of St. Martin. I better get to work because I’ve got less than 24 hours to learn how to speak French
